Plenty of couples I meet have been together for years, own a house, maybe have children, and never married. Many assume that counts for the same thing. It doesn’t.

If one of you dies without a will, an unmarried partner has no automatic right to inherit under the intestacy rules. There’s no such thing as a “common-law” spouse in English law. If you own the house jointly it may pass to the survivor, depending on how you own it. But savings, a car, a pension that isn’t nominated, anything in one name, can go to parents, children or siblings instead. The survivor may have to go to court to claim.
