For a lot of families I meet, the house is the biggest thing they own. Some have lived in it for decades and paid it off years ago. It’s what you’ve worked for, and it’s what you want your children to have.

That’s exactly the situation where sideways disinheritance does the most damage. If you and your husband or wife leave everything to each other, the survivor owns the whole house. If they later remarry, or move in with someone and change their will, the house can end up going to that new partner and their family. Your children can be left out completely, even though nobody set out to do it.
