what if you don’t have children?

A lot of wills advice assumes you’ve got children to leave things to. Plenty of people don’t. And for them, a will matters even more.

If you’re married with no children and you die without a will, your husband or wife usually inherits everything. That might be what you want. But then it all passes under their will, or their family’s, not yours. Your side of the family may get nothing.

If you’re single, or living with a partner you’re not married to, the intestacy rules pick your relatives in a fixed order: parents, then brothers and sisters, then nieces and nephews, and so on. Your partner gets nothing automatically. Close friends, godchildren and charities get nothing either.

A will lets you decide. You might want to split things between both sides of the family. You might want to leave something to a friend who’s been good to you, or a cause you care about. You might want to name an executor you trust, rather than a relative you rarely see.
