I meet a lot of people who’ve lost their husband or wife and haven’t touched their own will since. That’s understandable. There’s a lot to deal with, and paperwork is the last thing anyone wants to think about.

But most couples’ wills leave everything to each other first. Once one of you has gone, that part of the survivor’s will no longer does anything. Everything then depends on the backup wording. It might still be fine. It might name executors who are no longer suitable. It might not reflect what you’d want now, perhaps for grandchildren who weren’t born when you made it.
