Here’s something a lot of people don’t know. In England and Wales, getting married or entering a civil partnership cancels any will you made before. The only exception is a will written specifically with that marriage in mind.

So if you made a will years ago, then married, your old will has probably gone. If you died, the intestacy rules would decide who gets what. Your husband or wife would usually get a large share, often everything, and your children from before might get much less than you’d planned. Sometimes nothing.

Divorce works differently. It doesn’t cancel a will, but it treats your ex as if they’d died, for most purposes. That can leave gaps too.

So if your life has changed since you last looked at your will, it’s worth checking. I’ll read what you’ve got and tell you honestly whether it still works.
