Shireoaks is barely ten minutes from me. It’s a small place on the Chesterfield Canal, with the marina and the railway station, close to where Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire meet. Because it’s so close, I can usually fit a visit in at short notice.

what if nobody can find your will?

You’d be surprised how often this happens. Someone makes a perfectly good will, puts it somewhere safe, and then nobody can find it. It’s in a drawer, a biscuit tin, a loft box. Or the family know it exists but not where. If the original can’t be found, it can cause real problems, and sometimes the estate is dealt with as if there was no will at all.

There are a few sensible options. You can keep it at home in a clearly labelled, fireproof place, and tell your executors where it is. Or you can lodge it with HMCTS, the government court service, which keeps wills on record so they can be found when needed. I can arrange that for you for £249 as a one-off, with nothing to pay each year.
