Most people think of lasting powers of attorney as something for their parents. But they’re just as important for anyone with a mortgage, a family or a job.

If you had a serious accident or illness and couldn’t make decisions for a while, your family wouldn’t automatically be able to step in. Being married doesn’t give your husband or wife control of your bank account in your sole name. It doesn’t let them make decisions about your care. Your adult children can’t sign things for you just because they’re your children.

A lasting power of attorney lets you choose who can. There are two types. One covers money and property. The other covers health and care. You can have one or both. They have to be made while you’re well, and they have to be registered before they can be used. So it’s worth doing now, rather than waiting until you need one.
